MMDA warns barangay officials against ‘one-side parking’

Weeks before the 60-day deadline to clear roads of obstructions, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned barangay officials against acting on their own when implementing “one-side parking” on the streets.

MMDA traffic czar Edison Nebrija said that barangay officials are not deputized to designate parking areas on the road without the approval of the city hall officials.

Before doing so, Nebrija said that barangay officials must first create an ordinance which will be submitted to the city council for approval.

Nebrija said that the agency will respect the ordinance should the local government gives its nod of approval.

According to the MMDA, Barangay Lipunan in Quezon City implemented one-side parking along the inner road near Camp Crame.

The Department of Interior and Local Government ordered local executives across the country to reclaim public roads from private use within 60 days. Mayors who fail to comply with President Duterte’s marching order could be slapped with administrative charges or even face suspension.
