SUV falls off Legazpi port

A woman was hurt after her sport utility vehicle fell off a port in Legazpi City on Monday.

In a report by The STAR, the driver, identified as Josefina Thomas, was about to park her Ford Everest inside the Legazpi port when it overshot and fell into the water.

Port personnel and other bystanders immediately rescued Thomas who was stuck inside her submerged vehicle. Rescuers had to forcibly open the vehicle’s door in order to rescue her.

The victim suffered bruises and was immediately brought to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Philippine Ports Authority – Legazpi acting port manager Fatima Reaso said that it was the first time that a vehicle fell off in the area.

“We remain puzzled as to how this car managed to jump off the water while the port rail is high enough to stop the wheels.”

Following the incident, Reaso said that she would suggest to further elevate the rail at the port’s parking area to prevent other accidents from happening.

Thomas is the finance officer of the private motorcycle dealer brand RUSI.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the incident.

However, others speculated that the driver accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. – With reporting from Cet Dematera/STAR
