87-year-old candy vendor gets free bike from good samaritan

An 87-year-old candy vendor got the surprise of his life when he received a free mountain bike from a kind-hearted shop owner.

According to the viral Facebook video uploaded by CARBS Motor/Bicycle Parts, candy vendor Carlos Samonte has been dropping by the shop every day to inquire from the staff if there is an available bike for him.

Since May 15, Samonte has been frequenting the shop twice a day to ask if he can purchase the mini mountain bike for P2,000 as that was the only money he had. It’s less than half of the bike’s P4,800 original price.

On June 3, Samonte dropped by the shop again and was able to talk to the shop owner, Fe Carandang.

The old man asked if he could purchase the bike with his limited budget. He was all smiles when the owner agreed to sell the bike at a discount. Little did he know, another surprise was waiting for him.

In the viral video taken by Pagador, Carandang seemingly agreed to sell the bike to Samonte for less than half the price. She accepted the money and motioned the staff to make a receipt. But moments later, Carandang returned the money and just gave the bike for free.

“Kunin mo na yan, regalo namin sa iyo,” Carandang said.

The old man was visibly surprised and happy for the kindness and goodwill from the store owner. Aside from the mountain bike, the shop also gave the old man a bike lock and helmet so he can ride safely.

She also mentioned that Samonte’s son dropped by the shop to personally thank them.

As of Thursday morning, the viral video gathered more than 550,000 reactions, 93,000 comments and 166,000 shares on Facebook.
