The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has directed all its personel to avoid passing through the dedicated bus lanes on EDSA in order to speed up travel time along the main thoroughfare.

In a directive issued on July 2, the AFP said that those who will be caught by traffic enforcers or reported by concerned citizens will be “immediately subjected to administrative disciplinary actions.”

AFP chief Gen. Felimon Santos Jr. earlier asked military personnel to “treasure the trust of Filipinos” and emphasized the importance of discipline in the military profession.

“The outstanding support that we are receiving from the people does not excuse our wrong behaviors, nor does our rank give us authority to violate laws and policies,” Santos said.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic czar Edison ‘Bong’ Nebrija earlier said that police and military vehicles as well as emergency responders will be temporarily allowed to use the designated bus lanes.

“So ang advice is payagan muna yung mga police and military as long as they’re using a marked vehicle. Hindi pu-pwede ang red plate lang. Kailangan marked vehicle talaga para malaman namin na AFP, PNP sila or emergency responder sila,” Nebrija said.

The MMDA started apprehending private vehicles that are using the designated bus lanes on EDSA.
