BMW Philippines is ending a tough 2020 on a high note as they were able to roll out four new machines this year. They started strong, unveiling the new X1 and 1 Series before the world was forced to press pause. In June, the 2 Series Gran Coupé was unveiled, and just a few days ago, the R 18 cruiser made itself known in the Philippine market.
The X1 was refreshed to utilize BMW’s new styling cues on the exterior, particularly the larger grille. Inside are also a slew of updates like new stitching and high gloss accents, and USB-C ports, while retaining tech luxuries like powered tailgate, smart keyless entry, and the 6.5-inch screen at the center of the dash.
The biggest change for the X1 is in the mechanicals, now being powered by a 2.0L turbodiesel engine that puts out 150hp and 350Nm of torque, paired to an eight-speed auto, and now is only front-wheel drive. The changes positively affected the pricing though, with the new X1 coming in at only P3.090 million, around P800k cheaper than its predecessor.
Global market preference might’ve shifted towards crossovers and SUVs, but BMW didn’t forget about hot hatch fans. The updated 1 Series was given the exterior update of the merged kidney grille among others, and increased cabin and cargo space. It was brought in two flavors – the 118i Sport and the feisty M135i xDrive.
The 118i Sport has a 1.5L TwinPower Turbo with 140hp and 220Nm of torque, coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The M135i has a beastly 2.0L TwinPower Turbo that makes 306hp and 450Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed DCT with Launch Control. It also has an all-wheel drive system to hug corners really well.
An all-new model also made its way into our country, in the name of the 2 Series Gran Coupé. BMW claims it as the embodiment of a new generation of BMW coupes. It has dynamic lines that go up the frameless doors, down the sloping roofline, and ends on the sporty rear with full LED lighting array.
The 218i Gran Coupé comes in only one variant sporting Sensatec upholstery, “Illuminated Berlin” trims, memory function for the driver, and Parking Assistant among others. Under the hood is their 1.5L TwinTurbo Power engine, same with the earlier launched models.
Finally, BMW Philippines caps off their year with their new R 18. It’s a modern-retro cruiser that encapsulates BMW’s two-wheel history and takes it to new heights. Its pièce de résistance is the new 1.8L “Big Boxer” engine that produces 91hp and 150Nm of torque – that’s the power of a subcompact sedan but on two wheels! Surrounding it are heritage touches of a BMW bike like the teardrop tank, duplex cradle frame, and an open-shaft drivetrain. All the R 18 that came in are “First Edition” versions, having black paint with double white pinstriping, additional chrome touches, a seat badge, and the ‘First Edition’ title on the sides.
Modern amenities include a new speedometer with multifunction display, full LED headlight, automatic stability control, three riding modes, Hill Start Control, reverse gear, and heated grips.
