Fully electric Porsche Taycan offers convenient home-charging system

Porsche studies reveal that majority of Porsche Taycan owners charge the fully electric sports car overnight at home, reflecting other global research data which shows that around 80 percent of electric vehicle owners use residential-charging solutions because of the convenience these offer.

Allowing the new, 2021 Porsche Taycan to be comfortably charged at home is the Porsche Mobile Charger Connect. Ensuring a simple and convenient home-charging system, the Porsche Mobile Charger Connect comes standard with the new Taycan that is scheduled to arrive in Porsche Philippines showrooms in March. The sports car’s local introduction happens simultaneously with the latest model’s official worldwide rollout.

The Taycan has two charging ports located in each of the car’s front fenders. The Porsche Mobile Charger Connect, currently set up locally for up to 11 kW but in the future will be available for up to 22 kW of alternating current (AC), can be plugged into either of the two ports. This guarantees Taycan owners convenient access. The port on the right fender can be used for direct current (DC) charging.

In the new Taycan that is set to arrive in the Philippines, both these charging ports are covered by electrically operated doors that slide open or close via a simple hand gesture. This special feature was specified by Porsche Philippines, along with an additional infotainment touchscreen display for the front passenger.

The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This means consistent high performance, short charging times, and less weight and space for the system’s cabling.

With the 800-volt system, the latest Taycan can be charged from 5 percent to 80 percent in under 30 minutes when using a 175 kW DC charger. When fully charged, driving range can go as high up to 431 kilometers under ideal conditions (according to WLTP standards). Further helping the driving range is the Taycan’s aerodynamics, which allows for a slippery 0.22 coefficient of drag value.

Recalling the legendary Porsche 911’s classic rear-engine/rear-drive layout, the new, 2021 Taycan has a Permanent magnet Synchronous Motor (PSM) on the rear axle, promising to further raise the sports car’s driving pleasure. The latest model is identical to all Taycan variants as it boasts of acceleration and handling performance typical of sports cars. Distinguishing the new model are its 20-inch Taycan Turbo Aero wheels and black anodized brake calipers. The fully electric sports car’s front apron, side sills and rear diffuser are finished in black, while LED headlights are standard.

The new Taycan’s PSM is matched to a two-speed transmission and Porsche’s Performance Battery. The powertrain combination produces up to 408 PS, enabling the fully electric sports car to accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and to reach a top speed of 230 km/h.

Like all Taycan variants, the latest one is defined by a front area that is low and wide, with fenders that are highly contoured. The sports car’s silhouette is shaped by a sporty roof line that slopes toward the rear, a sleek greenhouse, drawn-in C-pillars, and pronounced shoulders above the fenders. Complementing these touches is the glass-look lettering for the Porsche logo on the rear light bar.

In the five-seat cabin, the new Taycan is equipped with a 16.8-inch, free-standing curved instrument cluster, a central 10.9-inch infotainment display, and comfort seats in front with eight-way power adjustment, among numerous other luxury items. The sports car also boasts of spacious luggage compartments located in its front and rear sections.
