LTO eyes mid-2020 release of 2014-2016 license plates

The long-awaited supply of license plates for vehicles purchased from 2014 to 2016 is set for release in the middle of next year, according to the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

During an interview for the OneNews television program “The Chiefs,” LTO chief Edgar Galvante confirmed that the planned release of the license plates for 2014 to June 30, 2016 vehicle purchases should happen not later than the middle of 2020.

The license plates backlog is estimated at around 5.8 million for four-wheeled vehicles, while some 2.5 million plates for motorcycles have yet to be made.

The LTO earlier said that all of the license plates of all vehicle types will be released by the end of 2019. However, Galvante said that problems in supplies of materials led to the delay of the release.

The STAR reported that some adjustments had to be made on the license plate material because the previous supplier had different edgings.

Meanwhile, Galvante maintained that the agency is still addressing the problem on how to comply with the law which requires bigger plates for motorcycles. – With Romina Cabrera/STAR
