The Land Transportation Office (LTO) reminded motorists that those who committed even a single traffic violation will not be eligible to avail of a driver’s license with a 10-year validity once the agency rolls them out by October 2021.

In a virtual meeting on Wednesday, LTO chief Edgar Galvante said that the implementation of the agency’s demerit system has already started and those who incurred traffic infractions will only be allowed to have a standard driver’s license with a five-year validity upon renewal.

“Actually yung demerit system ini-implement na yan so ‘yung mga drivers na na-cite-tan, meron nang equivalent demerit points na nakalagay sa record nila,” Galvante said.

The LTO started the implementation of a new demerit system for traffic violations last year which would serve as the basis for the renewal of driver’s license. Under RA 10930, the validity of driver’s licenses have been extended from three years to five years. The license can be extended up to 10 years if the applicant did not violate any type of traffic violation.

“Kahit na single demerit point that can be considered na hindi ka maka-avail nung 10-year valid license kung hindi yung normal lang standard na five-year license na mae-enjoy mo na privileged. Kasi ito ginagawa bilang premium para doon sa mga taong sumusunod sa batas trapiko, hindi nagvi-violate,” Galvante explained.
