Three carnappers in rent-sangla modus nabbed

Three suspected carnappers involved in the ‘rent-sangla’ modus were arrested by the Manila Police District (MPD) after a recent operation in Ermita, Manila.

P/Major Rosalino Ibay Jr., chief of the SMaRT-Anti Carnaping Unit, identified the suspects as Rosario Capulong and Ronaldo Capulong, 54; and Necita Torres, 48, all residents of Teachers Village, Quezon City.

According to police, the three were nabbed during a sting operation around 3 p.m., Wednesday, inside the YMCA Building along A. Villegas Street in Ermita.

Police said their asset was able to close a transaction with the suspects regarding the purchase of a vehicle with fake documents. An entrapment operation soon followed that led to the arrest of the three suspects who received marked money during the transaction.

Recovered from the suspects were a silver Toyota Innova 2019 with plate number NBQ-8377, fake Official Receipt and Certificate of Registration (OR/CR) for the vehicle, one red Toyota Wigo 2017 with plate number NBZ-1682, and two identification cards.

Ibay Jr. said that the vehicles were only rented or pawned to the suspects, who are faking the documents before selling them off to unsuspecting buyers.

The police chief warned the public that under the Anti-Fencing Law, buyers of vehicles through illegal transactions like this will be held liable should the vehicle turn out to be stolen. The suspects are currently detained at the MPD-SMaRT custodial jail and will face carnapping charges and Article 316 (other forms of swindling) of the Revised Penal Code at the Manila City Prosecutor’s Office. – Danilo Garcia/PSN
