NLEX to reopen cash lanes

NLEX Corp. said that it will reopen cash lanes in all toll plazas to improve the traffic situation along the North Luzon Expressway.

“We will be opening cash lanes in all toll plazas during this transition towards 100% cashless transactions. For the smaller plazas, where there are limited lanes, we will have an exclusive RFID lane beside a combined cash/RFID lane. Sticker installation and reloading of RFIDs will also be relocated to other locations in order not to compete with the limited road space. They will be moved to other strategic areas in and out of the expressway,” NLEX Corp. president and general manager Luigi Bautista said.

Apart from reopening the cash lanes along the expressway, the company also said that it will also implement a “barrier up“ procedure in the RFID lanes.

“This means that in these RFID lanes where the lane barriers are kept raised, RFID subscribers need not stop and go during their passage even as the scanners/readers continue to operate and record the toll transactions,” the company said.

It also said that it will transfer the ongoing RFID sticker installation and reloading activities away from the toll plazas.

Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian earlier suspended the business permit of NLEX Corp. for the company’s failure to improve its RFID toll system.

Following the suspension order, motorists can still pass through the NLEX system but toll fees will no longer be collected.
