Next-gen Toyota Wigo previewed with GR badge in Indonesia

Toyota has previewed the next-generation Wigo, through the unveiling of the Agya in Indonesia, with the intention of presenting ever-better cars to meet growing customer needs. The new Toyota Agya in Indonesia comes in two variants: the base G and the higher-spec GR Sport, which targets those who want a more dynamic driving experience. This will likely be the same story for the Wigo in the Philippines, but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

Toyota has sold over 320,000 units in Indonesia since the first-generation model was introduced in September 2013, and it aims to sustain the model’s reputation as the first choice for customers looking for their first car. In the Philippines, over 14,000 units of the Wigo were sold in 2022, allowing it to take the sixth rank in terms of overall sales in the country.

The 2023 Toyota Wigo has a more human-centered approach, which is evident in the latest technology used. The exterior of the Wigo is now longer and wider than the previous model, sitting closer to the ground, thanks to the Daihatsu New Global Architecture A (DNGA-A) platform that also underpins the Avanza and Raize.

The 2023 Wigo GR Sport comes with vertically oriented LED fog lamps on the front bumper, accompanied by more aggressive housings and a GR badge in front. The 2023 Wigo features a new character line running through the pull-out door handles, and the GR Sport sports a black contrast roof that terminates in a rear spoiler above the tailgate. A set of 14-inch wheels is standard on the new Wigo G, while the GR Sport wears 15-inch alloys.

The interior of the new Wigo is streamlined, offering a more spacious cabin that seats five occupants with more elbow and knee room. The dashboard has been revamped, doing away with circular air vents in favor of trapezoidal ones, while the center console appears more elevated. Luggage space behind the second-row seats has been expanded by 610mm, and the head unit is a freestanding 7-inch display that supports Apple CarPlay for connectivity.

The new Wigo has up to six airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, pedestrian protection tech, and seatbelt reminders as standard safety features. Driver-assist features such as Lane Departure Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking are available, allowing the new Wigo to score four out of five stars in crash tests conducted by the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP).

The powertrain options for the new Wigo’s trim levels include a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 88 horsepower and 112 Nm of torque, the same power unit used in base variants of the Raize. The new engine is more fuel-efficient yet produces higher torque than a 4-cylinder motor with the same displacement. The power is transferred to the front wheels through a choice of either a 5-speed manual or a dual-mode CVT, the latter replacing the 4-speed torque converter automatic. The GR Sport benefits from revised steering and suspension, making the car sportier and more responsive in terms of handling.

Although no pricing information has been confirmed for the Indonesian-market 2023 Toyota Agya yet, the carmaker says it will not go beyond IDR 250 million (Php 898,000) for the GR Sport trim. The new Toyota Wigo is expected to sustain its reputation as the first choice for customers looking for their first car, while the GR Sport variant targets those who want a more dynamic driving experience.
