Hyundai joins the hybrid competition with the new Tucson and Santa Fe HEV

After seeing relative success in their battery-electric offerings, Hyundai Motor Philippines (HMPH) is bringing in the new Tucson in its gas, diesel, and hybrid powertrains; as well as the Santa Fe HEV. Both cars can boost the brand’s ongoing momentum as they have experienced a 40 percent growth in the first half of 2024, compared to the same period last year. The unveiling was held at Alabang Town Center yesterday. Aside from a product presentation by HMPH representatives, the event was also graced by Hyundai Brand Ambassador, actor Paulo Avelino.

“Through the introduction of these two cars, Hyundai further diversifies its lineup – we now have a fleet of SUVs, MPVs, EVs, high performance cars, and, finally, Hyundai Hybrid. Whichever stage of life you’re in, there is a Hyundai vehicle that suits your needs, solidifying our purpose to provide a Hyundai for every Filipino.” says HMPH Managing Director, Cecil Capacete.

All-new Santa Fe HEV

The new Santa Fe HEV will serve as the new top of the line model of Hyundai’s outdoorsy SUV. It’s powered by a 1.6-liter Smartstream turbocharged petrol  hybrid system that has a total system output of 235ps and 367Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed automatic. As of this writing there’s no word from HMPH about its all-electric range.

Its Hybrid system comes with e-Dynamic Drive that allows electric-powered Handling, Traction, Evasive Handling Assist, and Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control. Through the Smart Regenerative Braking System, the level of energy that the vehicle can recover is automatically adjusted during deceleration based on driving conditions to provide fuel-efficient driving.

As for the amenities, it carries over all of the features present in the Santa Fe’s Calligraphy trim. What’s different this time around is they removed the 60-40 seat on the second row and replaced it with two captain’s seats with remote folding function. All else including the Nappa leather upholstery, dual sunroof, dual wireless chargers, UV-C sterilization tray, bi-directional storage console, 12.3-inch curved panoramic instrument and infotainment cluster (where Hybrid system-related information such as Hybrid battery level, Hybrid Fuel Economy, and Electric Motor Usage can be viewed), as well as the full suite of Advanced Driver Assist System are present in the Santa Fe HEV.

Safety also comes standard in the form of Hyundai SmartSense, which includes a Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, All-around Parking Distance Warnings, and Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, a Surround View Monitor, among others.

The all-new Santa Fe HEV is available in select Hyundai dealerships with a retail price of PhP 3,330,000. It comes in 6 colors: Abyss Black, Creamy White, Magnetic Gray, Earthy Brass, Terracotta Orange, and Ocado Green.

New Tucson in gas, diesel, and HEV

HMPH has brought in the facelifted Tucson in all its forms – gas, diesel, and hybrid variants. It’s just that only the HEV has a finalized spec sheet for now, so we’ll have to discuss the gas and diesel trims another time.

As for the Tucson Hybrid, it has the same engine as the Santa Fe. That is the 1.6-liter Smartstream turbo hybrid with 235ps and 367Nm of torque, also paired to a 6-speed automatic with a steering column-mounted shift-by-wire gearshift lever. It also has a little trick aside from the usual drive modes (Eco, Smart, and Sport), it has a ‘Baby Mode’ that makes the car accelerate and brake more smoothly so that babies and kids can fall asleep easier.

Outside, it looks almost the same as the outgoing until you take a closer look. Its grille is a bit bigger with larger intakes, and the DRL is also squarish unlike before that are trapezoidal. This gives the front face of the Tucson a less sharp but friendlier demeanor. It still has full LED lighting with Static Bending Light in front, a panoramic sunroof up top, and power tailgate at the back.

Like the Santa Fe, the new Tucson Hybrid comes with e-Dynamic Driving, as well as Smart Regenerative Braking for optimal fuel-efficiency.

It has received the same design language as the Santa Fe inside the cabin. It now has the same 12.3-inch Curved Panoramic Screen that houses the instrument cluster and infotainment system that has Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The center console’s base sits lower than before but has a floating-type console box with armrest that also contains the cup holders, wireless charger, and a few more controls.

In terms of safety, it still has six Airbags, Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, Downhill Brake Control, and Tire Pressure Monitoring System. It also has Hyundai SmartSense that has features like Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Forward Collision Avoidance Assist among others.

Despite not having the spec sheets for the gas and diesel trims, we already have pricing for all three variants of the new Tucson. It will retail for PHP 1,680,000 for the gasoline model, PHP 1,980,000 for the diesel, and the hybrid comes in at PHP 2,290,000. The new Tucson comes in 7 colors: Pine Green, Phantom Black Pearl, White Cream, Shimmering Silver, Amazon Gray, Deep Sea, and Cashmere Bronze.
