Changan Philippines made a splash at the 2024 Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) with the Philippine debut of the Changan Hunter REEV, a range-extended electric pickup that brings a unique blend of hybrid efficiency, off-road capability, and modern tech.
Touted as the world’s first range-extended electric pickup, the Hunter REEV attracted significant attention at the show, where Changan’s new technology and versatile design approach resonated with local consumers interested in sustainable mobility options.
Hybrid with a Twist
First introduced at the 2023 Guangzhou Auto Show, the Hunter REEV, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor acting solely as a generator, stands out as a solution to the limited EV infrastructure in many parts of the Philippines.
Unlike traditional hybrids, the engine in the Hunter is not used to drive the wheels directly; instead, it charges a 31.8 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which can also be charged via an external plug. This setup enables drivers to rely on electric power for shorter trips while offering an extended range of up to 1,031 kilometers when combining battery power with a full tank of gas. The battery-only range clocks in at 180 kilometers, making it ideal for city commutes or short trips.
Changan offers the Hunter REEV in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions. The RWD model is powered by a single electric motor producing 174 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, while the AWD version steps it up with dual motors, delivering a combined output of 268 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque. This additional power and traction make the AWD version especially suited for drivers who frequently encounter rough terrain or slippery roads, and with electronic locking differentials available in the AWD model, it’s equipped for light off-roading.
The Hunter REEV balances functionality with lifestyle-oriented design features. Its exterior is rugged but refined, with durable materials to resist scratches and corrosion. The split tailgate design enhances its utility, with the top half able to open independently—ideal for carrying long items without needing to leave the full tailgate open. The bed’s sturdy build and anti-scratch surface mean it’s ready for all sorts of heavy-duty cargo, although its payload capacity is set at 495 kilograms, just enough for most day-to-day hauling needs.
Inside, the Hunter REEV is outfitted with a comfortable, tech-forward cabin. Leather seats with driver-side power adjustment, a digital instrument cluster, and a touchscreen infotainment system offer a modern experience that’s often more reminiscent of a passenger SUV than a utility truck. Additional features like a wireless charging pad, a 360-degree camera for easy maneuvering, and an electronic column shift add convenience and an upscale touch. With ten different driving modes, drivers can tailor the Hunter’s performance to specific conditions, from highway cruising to city driving and off-road exploration.
Changan Philippines hasn’t disclosed the exact pricing of the Hunter REEV, but it should be valued around P2 million.
Exclusive Uni-T Midnight Edition
Another highlight at Changan’s booth is the Uni-T Midnight Edition, an exclusive model limited to only 10 units. This limited-edition version is designed with a premium, sporty look featuring gloss black accents, a darkened grille, and carbon finishes for that extra edge. For anyone looking for something that stands out on the road, the Midnight Edition might just fit the bill.
Deals and Perks for PIMS Attendees
To celebrate its PIMS debut, Changan rolled out some hard-to-ignore promos for visitors. The popular CS35 Plus model is available at a PHP 400,000 discount on 2023 units, a deal that’s live until the end of the year. Additionally, Changan teamed up with Shell Philippines to offer customers who reserve a Changan vehicle at the event PHP 10,000 worth of Shell Go+ Points, a handy perk for fueling up.
