NLEX to be called Marcelo H. Del Pilar Expressway?

Marcelo H. Del Pilar Expressway may soon be the new name of the North Luzon Expressway after the House of Representatives approved House Bill 8958 on its third and final reading.

In his proposal, Rep. Joe Antonio Sy-Alvarado (First District, Bulacan) said that renaming NLEX to Marcelo H. Del Pilar Expressway will “bestow the distinct honor on and perpetuate the memory of Del Pilar who is one of the country’s national heroes.”

“If favorably passed into law, it will constantly remind us of the noble deeds of Marcelo H. del Pilar and inspire our people to emulate his example of selfless service to the nation, while his exceptional courage and leadership gave hope and helped unite the Filipino people at a critical time in our country’s history,” he added.

Sy-Alvarado explained that under the National Historical Commission of the Philippines’ guidelines in naming roads, schools, buildings, and other important public structures must have historical and cultural significance.

Apart from that, they also must contribute to the positive development of national pride.

Del Pilar, also known as Plaridel, was born in Cupang, San Nicolas, Bulacan on August 30, 1850. Together with Jose Rizal, Graciano Lopez Jaena, Mariano Ponce and Pablo Rianzares, Del Pilar established the newspaper La Solidaridad in Barcelona, Spain
