Porsche dominates luxury, performance, design in World Car Awards

The Porsche 911, Taycan, 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 have all been named finalists in the 2020 World Car Awards.

Five categories comprise the awards, with three finalists in each category. Included in the awards’ World Luxury Car category are the Porsche 911 and Taycan, which are joined by the Mercedes-Benz EQC. The Taycan is also among the three candidates in the World Car Design of the Year category, in which it is competing against the Peugeot 208 and Mazda3.

Meanwhile, the awards’ World Performance Car category has no other finalists but Porsches. Listed here are the 911 and Taycan, as well as the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4, which is counted as a single entry.

The 911 remains unmistakably committed to the Porsche design DNA, having a more muscular look and an interior featuring a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor. Intelligent control and chassis elements, as well as innovative assistance systems, combine to create the uncompromising dynamism the classic rear-engine sports car is famed for.

The new 718 Spyder continues the history of the Porsche 550 Spyder and the 718 RS 60 Spyder. It is a pure machine for driving pleasure, featuring a lightweight convertible top that can cope with high speeds, and which is suitable for everyday use. Its fixed-top twin, the 718 Cayman, looks striking, athletic and efficient as it packs a newly developed flat-four engine that’s powerful yet fuel-efficient. This sport coupe follows in the tracks of Porsche’s historic 718 cars which have won legendary races such as the Targa Florio and Le Mans in the 1950s and 1960s.

For its part, the Taycan is Porsche’s first fully electric sports car. This 4-door sports sedan mixes typical Porsche performance and connectivity with everyday usability. Highly advanced production methods and the features of the Taycan are setting new standards in the fields of sustainability and digitalization.

Evaluation for the annual World Car Awards started in November last year. The finalists are determined by 86 international automotive journalists who test drive and vote on the eligible vehicles for a particular year. Winners will be announced during a grand finale awards ceremony and press conference at the New York International Auto Show on April 8.
