Porsche’s fully electric Taycan: Fascinating car that arrives at the right time

The fully electric Porsche Taycan is one of the sports car maker’s most ambitious projects, requiring revolutionary innovations not only for its drivetrain technologies, but also for its production processes. Porsche built an entirely new manufacturing plant for the model, and hired around 2,000 new associates who underwent an intensive training program. With deliveries of Porsche’s first fully electric car surpassing forecasts, it is clear the Taycan is a fascinating car that has arrived at the right time.

Now, the 2021 Porsche Taycan is available in the Philippines, with the arrival coming alongside the latest model’s rollout in showrooms worldwide.

The newest Taycan is identical to all Taycan variants and still boasts of acceleration and handling performance typical of Porsche sports cars. With a Permanent magnet Synchronous Motor (PSM) on the rear axle, the new car is a rear-wheel drive model, recalling the legendary Porsche 911’s classic rear-engine/rear-drive layout.

The PSM on the new Taycan’s rear axle gets a two-speed transmission and the Performance Battery. The powertrain operates on an 800-volt system structure instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars, ensuring consistent high performance, short charging times, and less weight and space for the system’s cabling. In the new Taycan, the combination produces up to 408 PS, enabling the fully electric sports car to accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and to reach a top speed of 230 km/h.

Distinguishing the newest model are its 20-inch Taycan Turbo Aero wheels and black anodized brake calipers. The new Taycan’s front apron, side sills and rear diffuser are finished in black, while LED headlights are standard as well.

Like other Taycan variants, the latest model is built using Porsche’s innovative Production 4.0 method that replaces the manufacturing plant’s traditional conveyor line with driverless transport systems. It uses a flow principle to transport the Taycan automatically from station to station, allowing team members to modify production at any time, integrate improvements, or accommodate special customer wishes.

Also, the production of the Taycan has been carbon-neutral right from the start, in line with Porsche’s vision of a Zero Impact Factory—or one in which the environmental footprint is reduced to a minimum. To achieve this means not just creating new production methods, but also considering the life cycle of Porsche cars starting from production of materials to recycling processes.

Further making the Taycan a sustainable car is Porsche’s emphasis—right from the development stage—on lightweight construction, aerodynamics, and recyclability. Porsche devised construction methods to use as little energy as possible, and started to use renewable raw materials, like recycled fiber from discarded fishing nets, for door panels and floor liners. The moves adhere to Porsche’s belief that its customers are as concerned about their environmental footprint as the company is.
