Cayenne, Macan power Porsche deliveries in H1

The iconic Porsche 911 bucked the global auto industry downturn as it saw a two percent rise in sales, or total deliveries of 16,919 units, during the first six months of 2020. Also continuing to drive Porsche’s performance during the same period were the company’s SUV models—the Cayenne and Macan.

The Cayenne emerged as Porsche’s most popular model worldwide with 39,245 examples sold while 34,430 units of the Macan were supplied to customers during the first half of the year. The performance follows the models’ significant popularity during the entire 12 months of 2019 when the Cayenne’s global sales reached 92,055 units—a 29 percent leap from the previous year—and those of the Macan tallied to 99,944 units, representing a 16 percent growth from 2018.

Porsche in the first six months of 2020 supplied a total of 116,964 cars to customers worldwide. The coronavirus crisis and the resulting closures of Porsche Centres over a period of several weeks resulted in a 12 percent decline in deliveries as compared to the prior year.

“We see positive tendencies, although we continued to feel the effects of the coronavirus crisis in the second quarter, especially in the US and Europe. A crucial factor here was the month of April when almost all Porsche Centres in these markets were still closed,” said Detlev von Platen, member of the executive board for sales and marketing at Porsche AG.

A relatively positive trend is evident in Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Middle East where Porsche sales reached 55,550 cars in the first half of 2020. China, with 39,603 deliveries, remains the sports car manufacturer’s largest single market in terms of volume. Korea and Japan were also strong markets in the region with sales of 4,242 and 3,675 units, respectively, with each showing double-digit growth rates over the prior year.

Von Platen noted the situation in Europe has been easing since May, even if things are not yet entirely back to normal. Porsche sold 32,312 cars between January and June in Europe, while 24,186 units were delivered to customers in the US during the same six-month stretch.

“We remain confident and are full of energy as we tackle the challenges in the second half of the year. The continuing positive development in China and other Asian markets will help us here, too,” von Platen said.
