A rare opportunity to drive a real race car now awaits the winners of Lamborghini’s “The Real Race” online sim racing competition played on the Assetto Corsa Competizione platform.
Nils Naujoks, sim racing manager of leading eSports team G2, bested 11 other top contenders in the September 24 grand final of the virtual racing series with a landslide 20-point lead. Naujoks won both events at the Barcelona and Mount Panorama tracks that comprised The Real Race’s final round, which capped off the five other rounds held between May and August on digital renditions of some of the most famous racetracks across the globe—Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, Nurburgring, Suzuka and Laguna Seca.
Joining the champion on the podium were Matthias Egger and Jordan Sherratt, who finished the virtual race series in second place and third place, respectively.
All three sim racing drivers have earned a spot to train alongside Lamborghini Squadra Corse drivers and to drive a real Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo on the legendary Imola raceway. The winners will also soon venture to Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata Bolognese headquarters where, in the course of three days, they get to visit the R&D simulator used to develop the latest Lamborghini models.
The Real Race final was a thrilling, star-studded evening attended by the likes of former Formula One racing driver David Coulthard, Formula One presenter Federica Masolin, and former Formula One racing driver and five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro hosting the event.
Over the course of the series, The Real Race attracted 1.5 million viewers on Lamborghini’s social media accounts and on its eSports website. Over 2,500 gamers from 106 countries registered for the event.
“We are really excited that our first steps into the eSports space has proven to be a huge success. The lockdown has presented a whole range of opportunities and challenges and we are proud that we were able to produce an eSports tournament series that resonated with the community,” said Katia Bassi, Chief Marketing and Communication Officer at Automobili Lamborghini.
“The Real Race has been a new chapter in our story, something different and innovative—just like our cars,” she added.
Truly something different and innovative is the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO which Naujoks, Egger and Sherratt are set to drive. Developed by Lamborghini Squadra Corse, the motorsport department of Automobili Lamborghini, the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO is distinguished by a body kit built in partnership with Dallara Engineering and Lamborghini Centro Stile. This raised the aerodynamic efficiency of the race car, making it less resistant to forward travel while improving stability.
Powering the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO is a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine that makes 620hp and 570Nm, and which is mated to six-speed sequential X-Trac gearbox. Among other items, the car is also fitted with Bosch Motorsport ABS that can be set to 12 positions; a nine-position Motec traction control; Pirelli P Zero DHD2 tires; an Alcantara-upholstered dashboard; and racing seats, seven-point safety harnesses and a fire extinguisher.
