MG’s effort to highlight its move towards electrification is on full display at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show, and some of the brand’s latest EV (electric vehicle) and PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) offerings were put front and center for all to appreciate.
These include the popular MG Cyberster EV concept, which looks like a futuristic MGB roadster and boasts of an 800km range, and acceleration from 0-100kph in less than 3 seconds; the handsome MG Linghang PHEV SUV, which succeeds a recently launched petrol variant; and the sporty, new MG 6 PHEV which continues the vehicle line’s racing-inspired driving dynamics with an updated powertrain.
MG’s Racing Heritage, Today
The MG brand is steeped in motorsport history—from breaking land speed records, winning the brutal Isle of Man Tourer’s Trophy, and in more recent history gaining triumph at the British Touring Car Championship. Even locally, the MG 5 came out on top of its class at the most recent Bonifacio 8-Hour Endurance Challenge held at the Clark International Speedway.
In 2020 the XPOWER-tuned MG 6, which is now on display at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show, bagged a double crown for team and model championships at the China Touring Car Championship. Fans at the show can also do their own customization of the XPOWER MG 6 at the MG XPOWER online store, and see how their design fares on a virtual race track.
MG: Always Young
MG has existed for almost a century, though make no mistake: MG isn’t an old, dusty brand that’s out of touch with the modern times. And it shows at the MG booth at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show, with youthful graffiti-like displays, vibrant colors, and a vehicle lineup that’s made for the consumers of tomorrow.
The MG 5 display, in particular, is set up in what is being dubbed a “selfie space” that’s worth a post in even the most curated of social media accounts. And to complete the brand journey, “time glasses” are made available to visitors of the booth, allowing them to witness the MG story from past to present.
MG is primed to focus on three major brand pillars: globalization, digitalization, and rejuvenation; all of which work harmoniously to produce cutting edge products and services that will be enjoyed for future generations. It is clear that MG does not compromise on being inclusive to younger audiences as it forges on with engaging efforts such as customized sports tuning, being a fashionable and trendy brand, and producing intelligent vehicle technologies. This British heritage brand is here to stay, and the future indeed looks bright for MG.
