Geely enters the subcompact sedan arena with Emgrand

Geely is ready to shake up the subcompact sedan segment with the launch of the 2022 Emgrand. Hoping to repeat the success of the Coolray in the subcompact SUV category, the Emgrand brings quality, technology, and contemporary aesthetics to the Philippines’s largest and most competitive market segment by volume.

“The Geely Emgrand aims to continue what we have begun from our young brand. We have heard and listened to our customers and this gave us the confidence to bring in a sedan for the Filipino market. Now, we are offering a sedan that will inspire you to elevate your life, be driven and provide you a more worthy vehicle for your daily mobility needs,” Sojitz G Auto Philippines (SGAP) President & CEO Yosuke Nishi said. SGAP is the local distributor of Geely vehicles.

As China’s bestselling sedan for nine years, selling 3.38 million units until last year, the Emgrand is the product of continuous improvement for Geely. The fourth-generation model now rides on the brand’s BMA platform and is built at the brand’s new 5G Connected Factory. Overall, it has a class-above body size measuring 4,638mm in length and 1,822mm in width. It also has an ultra-low 0.27 coefficient of drag and center of gravity.

In terms of assembly, the Emgrand, like its platform-mate, the Coolray, has undergone more than five million kilometers of testing to ensure high reliability and durability. The body itself features ultra-tight caps of less than 3.5 mm, while adopting the longest roof laser welding increases its strength and rigidity in route to a 5-star China New Car Assessment (CNAP) safety rating.

Outside, the Emgrand takes on the new Energy Pulse grille design, Geely’s newest design language reserved for its line of sedans. This is then flanked by full LED headlights with daytime running lights. Over to the side, it wears 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/50R17 tires, while at the back, full-width rhythmic LED taillights give it a sense of visual width and drama, especially at night. Other exterior features include power folding and heated side view mirrors and a sunroof.

The use of the Coolray’s platform has enabled Geely to give the Emgrand class-above space as well. The horizontal, wide cockpit design gives a minimalist look and feel, while freeing up additional legroom for those seated in front. Memory foam seats and a steering wheel covered in “constant temperature leather” ensure exceptional comfort. The trunk space is class-leading at 500 liters. Furthermore, the NVH is also impressive with in-vehicle noise registering at 37 decibels making it quieter than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Passengers aboard the Emgrand are also treated to class-leading features such as smart keyless entry with push button engine start, leatherette/suede combination seats with a 6-way power adjustment for the driver, 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, 8-inch infotainment screen, and an electronic control for the air conditioner with refresh and dry mode with rear vents and a CN95 filter.

Powering the Emgrand is Geely’s newest 1.5-liter normally aspirated 4-cylinder engine. Equipped with dual continuous variable valve timing, it’s tuned to deliver improved fuel efficiency. For the Philippine market, it makes 102hp and 142Nm of torque on 91 RON octane fuel. This is then mated to a CVT with eight virtual gears and cruise control. On the other hand, four-wheel disc brakes and the use of Bosch’s latest 9.3 ESP system also helps it achieve a 100 km/h to zero km/h braking distance of just 36 meters.

Aside from the aforementioned Electronic Stability Program, the Emgrand also comes with 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, tire pressure monitoring, speed-sending door locks, and reverse parking sensors with rear camera.

“Indeed, the new Geely Emgrand packs in enough features you would normally expect from bigger cars minus their expensive price. If I am to sum up the proposition of the Emgrand to the market, it is “Value for Money.” That’s what Geely is known for and that’s exactly what you get on the all-new Emgrand,” Nishi added.

The 2022 Emgrand comes in six colors: Proud Teal, Dark Blue, Gold, Gray, Red, and White and in two variants with the Emgrand Premium priced at P908,000, and the Emgrand Comfort priced at P798,000. It comes standard with a 5-year or 150,000-kilometer warranty whichever comes first.

During the launch period, customers who will purchase the Emgrand will automatically get a P50,000 discount and a Free 1-year Periodic Maintenance Service inclusive of parts, oil, and labor. Moreover, those who will reserve or purchase an Emgrand until May 31st automatically gets a raffle entry for a chance to be one of the three lucky winners of P 250,000 savings or rebate.
