The future of Pilipinas Shell amid the push for EVs

As the world shifts towards a more sustainable future, energy companies like Shell are also making changes to adapt to the new reality.

Jolo Valdez, the E-Mobility and Innovations Manager for Pilipinas Shell, recently sat down for a one-on-one interview to discuss the company’s plans for the future, specifically in the context of the energy transition.

When asked about the next steps for Shell, Valdez stated that the company will continue to conduct operations, come up with energy solutions, and collaborate with society to meet its Powering Progress strategy. This strategy aims to reduce emissions and increase the use of renewable energy sources.

One of the ways that Shell is adapting to the energy transition is through its Shell Recharge initiative. Valdez confirmed that in response to the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs), Shell is taking the lead in the energy transition by making EV charging more convenient and accessible to users. The company is looking at expanding the Shell Recharge network to metro Manila and other provinces in the Philippines in the coming years. This will make it more convenient and practical for people to own an EV in the Philippines.

Shell companies in the Philippines Country Chair Lorelie Quimbao-Osial, General Manager of Shell Energy Philippines Inc. Bernd Krukenberg, and Pilipinas Shell Vice President and General Manager for Mobility Randy Del Valle activate the switch for Shell Mamplasan to run on renewable electricity with the 3 color pieces: Blue, Green, and Purple representing Water and Air, Nature and Land, and Innovation and Technology, respectively.

When asked if Shell Recharge stations will always co-exist with conventional fuel stations, Valdez stated that the company is looking at expanding its Shell Recharge network across its Shell mobility stations, in destination locations, and even in offices or garages of fleet owners. The goal is to be a partner for both business-to-business and business-to-consumer customers to go electric in line with the company’s net zero emissions ambition by 2050 at pace with society.

Another important aspect of the energy transition is the shift toward renewable energy sources. When asked if all Shell Recharge stations will come from a sustainable source, Valdez stated that the company is planning to do this wherever possible. Additionally, he confirmed that Shell Mamplasan is the second Shell Mobility site to be powered by Shell Energy Philippines (SEPH), the retail electricity supplier under the Shell Group offering competitive and environment-friendly energy solutions to industrial and commercial customers in the Philippines. The first one is Shell NLEX Northbound in Balagtas, Bulacan. The company will continue to explore this with other mobility stations as part of its efforts to shift to low-carbon operations and Power Progress for the country.

Valdez also discussed how Shell will adapt to the projection of the country to go full EV by 2040. He stated that Shell is committed to building a ubiquitous and sustainable EV charging network to support EV adoption and growth in the Philippines. The company is committed to working with all sectors of society to find solutions that will accelerate decarbonizing the mobility and transport sector.

Finally, when asked if all stations will transition to renewable energy, Valdez stated that the company will continue to explore this with other mobility stations as part of their efforts to shift to low-carbon operations and Power Progress for the country.

Overall, it is clear that Shell, under the guidance of Jolo Valdez, is making a concerted effort to adapt to the energy transition and support the shift towards a more sustainable future. The company’s commitment to expanding its EV charging network, shifting to renewable energy sources, and working with all sectors of society to find solutions is a positive step forward in the right direction.
