Upcoming cars to watch out for in 2024

It’s almost the end of the year and for us automotive journalists, it’s also the time when we’re not expecting any vehicle launch anymore. That’s because it’s the month of celebration and parties, paving the way for another exciting year marked by totally new nameplate and some recurring but improved ones.

From compact city cars to powerful SUVs, the upcoming 2024 lineup of automobiles includes a diverse array of vehicles that cater to the varied needs and preferences of Filipinos. Some are confirmed while the others are products of informed conjecture.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most anticipated models set to make waves in the Philippine market.

Toyota Tamaraw: The Return of the Workhorse

Those who were born in the ‘80s or even the early ‘90s know what the Toyota Tamaraw is. The good news? It’s coming back but on a totally different platform. Based on the IMV platform that underpins the Hilux, Fortuner, and Innova, the upcoming Tamaraw will retain its workhorse status, as confirmed by TMP during its anniversary celebration this year. Expect the nameplate’s return in the middle of next year.

Hyundai Santa Fe: Boxy & Burly

Hyundai Motor Philippines has confirmed that the fifth-generation Santa Fe is arriving in the first quarter of 2024c reinvigorating its local lineup of MPVs and SUVs. The all-new model, now sporting a boxy appeal and burly off-roading capabilities, aims to elevate the nameplate’s positioning in the market.

Mitsubishi X-Force: From Concept to Production

Mitsubishi introduced the X-Force crossover in Indonesia this year, a rugged SUV designed to conquer both urban jungles and light terrains. It’s the production version of the XFC concept, touting a muscular exterior and advanced safety features.

Although not yet confirmed, it’s likely that Mitsubishi Motors Philippines will bring the X-Force locally to tap the growing small SUV segment.

Chery Tiggo 7 Pro PHEV, eQ1, and eQ7: Electric Takeover

After taking strides with the Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV, Tiggo 7 Pro Hybrid, and Tiggo 5X Pro Hybrid, Chery Philippines will take a bold step into the realm of electrification with the Tiggo 7 Pro PHEV, eQ1, and eQ7. These models were previewed  the 11th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS), offering a range of hybrid and electric options and providing Filipino consumers with more choices for eco-friendly driving.

The Tiggo 7 Pro PHEV, in particular, combines the benefits of a plug-in hybrid with the practicality of an SUV, catering to those who seek both efficiency and versatility. It has three driving modes: full EV mode, hybrid mode, and pure internal combustion engine mode. Combined, the Tiggo 7 Pro PHEV’s electric motor and combustion engine can output a total of 322 horsepower and 545 Nm of torque.

Lexus LBX: Electrified Luxury

Lexus Philippines leads the EV front of Toyota Motor Philippines, adding the RZ in its lineup this year. However, it’s poised to introduce a new nameplate into its lineup, the smallest offering to slot under the UX – the LBX.

For those who crave a combination of luxury and utility, the Lexus LBX is poised to be a game-changer. This luxury SUV boasts a bold and distinctive design, coupled with advanced features and hybrid power plant, making it a versatile choice for urban warriors in the younger demographic.

Subaru Forester: Revamped for Modernity

One of Subaru Philippines’ top-selling models, along with the renamed Crosstrek, the Forester will likely get its next-generation model next year. It was initially unveiled in the US this year, with an updated design and modernized interior amenities. It will have Subaru’s latest take on tech features, including the latest version of the award-winning EyeSight driver-assist features.

Geely Coolray: Here Comes the Four-Pot

Geely Philippines has taken the local market by storm with the Coolray, with the model even entering the top sales chart a year after it was introduced. Despite numerous cosmetic updates, it’s about time for a major update and that will arrive in the form of a new power plant: the turbocharged NordThor 1.5-liter four-cylinder develops 174 hp and 290 Nm of torque.

This model aims to strike a perfect balance between power and efficiency, wrapped in an updated sporty styling that Filipinos love.

Kia EV5: The Follow-Up

Kia Philippines entered the local electric vehicle arena with the EV6, and it’s now readying up to bolster its front with the EV5. Boasting impressive range and rapid charging capabilities, the EV5 aims to redefine the electric driving experience in the Philippines. Its futuristic design and eco-friendly features make it a standout choice for those looking to embrace the electric revolution without compromising on style.

Suzuki Swift: Revitalizing the Compact Segment

Revealed as a concept at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show and then a production model a week after, the next-generation Suzuki Swift will likely arrive next year to revitalize the company’s compact offering.

As the demand for fuel-efficient and practical vehicles continues to rise, the new Suzuki Swift emerges as a promising contender in the compact car category. Known for its nimble handling and sleek design, the Swift is expected to captivate urban dwellers with its efficient performance and modern features.

MG Cyberster and MG One: One-Two Punch

MG Philippines, now a subsidiary under SAIC, relaunched in 2023 with a lineup of EVs. The company surprised the members of the media with a preview of the Cyberster and One during a thanksgiving party. Both are confirmed to arrive mid-next year.

The MG Cyberster is an electric convertible sports car aimed at providing thrill on the road without tailpipe emission. The MG One, on the other hand, is a subcompact crossover bound to replace the ZS nameplate.

Omoda 5 and Jaecoo 7: Formidable Newcomers

As newcomers in the Philippine automotive market, Omoda & Jaecoo will introduce the Omoda 5 and Jaecoo 7 next year. These models have their own personalities, with the Omoda going for the younger buyer and Jaecoo hinting toward a more familial approach. Both will offer smart and connected mobility, along with a lifestyle approach that aligns with the evolving expectations of tech-savvy consumers.
