It’s not only the private sector that’s transitioning to electrified mobility these days. The Valenzuela LGU, represented by Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian, signed up for 41 units of BYD Dolphin to be supplied by BYD Greenfield. This makes Valenzuela the first LGU to have EVs in their fleet and the largest one at that.
This is part of Valenzuela LGU’s partnership with ACMobility and BYD Cars Philippines for their Go Green Valenzuela program that aims to make the city transform from an industrial hub to a more liveable and sustainable place. The savings from the reduced maintenance and zero fuel cost of the BYD Dolphin will help the city funnel more funds towards priority projects.
“By eliminating the need for fuel and significantly reducing maintenance costs, the BYD Dolphin offers the city of Valenzuela the potential to save up to 70% of its fleet’s operational and maintenance budget over a five-year period,” said Bob Palanca, Managing Director of BYD Cars Philippines. “This, combined with its zero tailpipe emissions, makes the BYD Dolphin a financially and environmentally sound investment for the city.”
The BYD Dolphin units will be integrated into the city’s police fleet. This will significantly boost police presence on the ground as they will now have more vehicles in rotation. The reduced reliance on fossil fuel and reduced maintenance cost will also save money for the city, while the zero emissions ensures the added cars won’t contribute to the current air situation of Valenzuela.
“Starting with the transformation of our fleets, beginning with police cars, we set a powerful example for private companies, communities, and individuals to reconsider their own choices,” said Gatchalian. “We recognize that our vision will not materialize overnight, but today, we take the wheel of change and drive towards the horizon of a cleaner future, where progress does not come at the expense of the environment.”
It was a full circle moment for Valenzuela Mayor Wes Gatchalian. He was the principal author of Republic Act 11697 or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act or EVIDA Law in the 18th congress. It set the framework on how the country can transition from traditional cars to electric vehicles, including the necessary infrastructure needed. Now he is utilizing the benefits of the law for his city.
The City of Valenzuela has also vowed to build 20 units of 7kW chargers and 2 units of 22kW chargers across the city. This reinforces the city’s goal towards green mobility and ensures smooth operation of the 41 new BYD Dolphins.
“We are grateful to the progressive city of Valenzuela for choosing BYD and the BYD Dolphin for its police fleet. The city’s choice is a shining example of how local governments can fulfill their duties while promoting sustainability and being more considerate of the environment,” said Lovelyn Labrador, Deputy General Manager for Corporate Services at BYD Philippines
