What to expect from BYD’s electrified Pickup Truck?

BYD Cars Philippines, a subsidiary of ACMobility, has officially announced the Shark 6 DMO for the Philippine market. After a series of teasers on various social media platforms and subsequent sightings on public roads, this plug-in hybrid pickup truck is now ready to take on the highly competitive pickup segment, led by nameplates like the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton, and Ford Ranger.

But what sets the Shark 6 DMO apart from the segment stalwarts? A quick glance at its global specs gives us an idea, though this is in no way a confirmation of what we’ll get locally. Here’s what you can expect from BYD’s first pickup truck that will expand the automaker’s electrified model lineup in the Philippines.

In its foreign specs, the BYD Shark 6 DMO is built on BYD’s Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) platform, combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with dual electric motors. This setup delivers a combined output of approximately 430ps and 650Nm of torque, allowing the fairly hefty truck to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. It features a 29.58 kWh BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering an electric-only range of up to 100 km. With a full tank and a fully charged battery, the Shark 6 DMO can cover a total distance of approximately 840 km, following the outstanding range the Seal 5 DM-i and Sealion 6 DM-i can cover.

The Shark 6 DMO has a robust and muscular design, measuring 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm. We saw the unit while having a stroll within BGC recently and it exuded a commanding presence on the road. The exterior features a distinctive front grille with a prominent BYD logo, C-shaped LED headlights, and a streamlined profile. The rear is equipped with LED taillights connected by a horizontal light strip.

Inside, the Shark 6 DMO offers a blend of comfort and technology. We expect the cabin of the local unit to have a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. A premium 12-speaker audio setup should also be available, while foreign specs include front seats that are heated, ventilated, and electrically adjustable. Meanwhile, the rear seats offer a 27-degree recline for enhanced passenger comfort – something that other midsize trucks currently don’t have.

Designed for versatility, the Shark 6 DMO is equipped with features suitable for off-road adventures. It offers a ground clearance of 230 mm, an approach angle of 31 degrees, a departure angle of 19.3 degrees, and a ramp-over angle of 17 degrees. The vehicle includes terrain modes for mud, sand, and snow, as well as Hill Descent Control and Hill Hold Control. The double wishbone suspension system at both the front and rear ensures stability and comfort across various terrains.

Apart from off-road capabilities, BYD touts the Shark 6 DMO’s utility features, which include a cargo bed with a capacity of 1,200 liters and a payload capacity of 835 kg. It has a braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg, making it suitable for hauling trailers or equipment if needed.

Just like the other plug-in hybrid models in BYD’s local lineup, the electrified truck also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing it to supply power to external devices, which is beneficial for outdoor activities or emergency situations.

If specs in other countries are to be followed, the Shark 6 DMO should come with seven airbags, plus a suite of driver assistance features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Rear Collision Warning, and Traffic Sign Recognition. A 360-degree camera system and parking sensors enhance maneuverability and parking safety.

“The arrival of the BYD Shark 6 DMO signifies BYD’s continuing commitment to providing game-changing vehicles that are set to transform how we move,” says Bob Palanca, Managing Director of BYD Cars Philippines. “We’re excited to shake things up again in the industry with the all-new BYD Shark 6 DMO. This electrified lifestyle pickup combines power, technology, performance, and sustainability, while offering adventure seekers a truly innovative and unparalleled driving experience,” Palanca continues.

The BYD Shark 6 DMO is now open for reservations across all BYD dealerships in the Philippines, with the official launch set for March 2025. While the exact pricing has not been disclosed, the company has a knack of surprising us with extra-competitive pricing, so keep us on your tabs for further updates next month.
