GAC M6 Pro – Unapologetically MPV

Crossovers and SUVs sell like hotcakes these days, but let’s not forget that the MPV segment is also bustling with choice. Amid the options in the market, GAC’s M6 Pro emerges as a refreshing and authentic MPV option.

Launched in March, the GAC M6 Pro boldly enters the competitive arena, squaring off against established rivals like the Toyota Innova Zenix. As a contender in the MPV market, the M6 Pro is designed with families in mind, offering a blend of practicality, comfort, and safety. Unlike many vehicles that blur the lines between SUV and MPV, the M6 Pro proudly embraces its identity as a family vehicle.

Our test drive of the M6 Pro took place at the R33 Drift Track in Pampanga. At first glance, this might seem like an unusual venue for an MPV evaluation. However, the controlled environment of the drift track provided a unique opportunity to push the vehicle to its limits and assess its performance in ways that typical city or highway driving cannot. This setting allowed us to fully explore the M6 Pro’s capabilities, particularly in terms of handling, safety features, and overall drivability under demanding conditions.

An MPV, through and through

The GAC M6 Pro embraces the quintessential MPV design, characterized by a massive grille and LED lights. This adherence to traditional MPV styling is commendable because the M6 Pro doesn’t pretend to be an SUV. It’s unapologetically a family vehicle, which is its greatest strength. The proportions are well-balanced, and the 18-inch wheels add a touch of elegance to its robust appearance.

Stepping inside the M6 Pro, you’re greeted with an array of top-shelf materials. The burgundy trims on the upholstery add a touch of sophistication, and the leather feels genuinely premium. The screens are seamlessly integrated into the dashboard, avoiding the common pitfall of looking like an afterthought. The displays are clear and intuitive, though the 360-degree camera display could benefit from some improvements for enhanced clarity.

The piano black trimmings on the center console, while aesthetically pleasing, are prone to scratches, which could be a concern over time. However, the massive center console storage box is a practical addition, providing ample space for personal items. Connectivity is another area where the M6 Pro shines. While it lacks wireless Apple CarPlay, the wired option works flawlessly.

Maximum practicality in mind

The 2-2-3 seat configuration offers ample headroom, making entry and exit to and from the third row significantly easier compared to typical compact MPVs. The second-row captain’s chairs are particularly comfortable, offering plenty of legroom and easy adjustability for maximum comfort.

The third row, though tight for three large adults, can comfortably accommodate three small-to-average-sized individuals. Practicality extends to the numerous storage points and cubbyholes scattered throughout the cabin, including a smartphone pocket on one of the captain’s chairs next to a USB-A charging port. The third row also features a charging port, a thoughtful touch for long family trips. When not in use, the third-row seats can be folded and stowed away on the floor, creating a vast luggage space.

Why in a drift track?

Testing the GAC M6 Pro on a drift track might seem like an odd choice, but it provided valuable insights into the vehicle’s safety features. The emergency braking performance, even during turns, was impressive, demonstrating the M6 Pro’s capability to handle unexpected situations with ease.

The multi-view option of the 360-degree camera proved to be quite useful in tight parking situations, though a clearer display would enhance its utility. The M6 Pro also excelled in the “moose test,” which simulates the need to avoid a static object on the road. The vehicle evaded the obstacle safely without losing control, thanks to the electronic aids designed to distribute braking forces during emergency maneuvers.

Moreover, the M6 Pro showcased its proficiency in handling low traction situations. The electronic aids effectively distributed torque only when there was enough traction, ensuring the vehicle’s movement remained controlled and safe.

Tuned for comfort and efficiency

Under the hood, the M6 Pro houses a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 174 hp and 270 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. While the engine is quite powerful, the M6 Pro is tuned more for comfort than performance. Even in sport mode, there’s a noticeable delay, but this translates to a smoother, more pliant ride for passengers. If you’re seeking a sporty MPV, the M6 Pro might not be the right choice.

The transmission operates smoothly, with minimal jerkiness, and it tends to stay in higher gears to maximize fuel efficiency. Despite its size, the M6 Pro handles well and doesn’t feel unwieldy. Body roll is minimal, even during sudden turns, enhancing the driving experience.

The advanced driver-assist system includes adaptive cruise control, although it leaves a bit more distance than ideal at its nearest setting. This might not be perfect for Filipino drivers who often cut into even the slightest gap, so it’s wise to stay alert and be ready to brake.

What an MPV should be

With pricing starting at P1,230,000 and reaching up to P1,598,000, the GAC M6 Pro offers excellent value for money. It embodies what an MPV should be: comfortable, efficient, practical, and safe. The M6 Pro is unapologetically a family car, and that’s its best trait. It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not, and in doing so, it excels in its role as a reliable, family-friendly vehicle.

For families seeking a versatile and well-equipped MPV, the GAC M6 Pro is a compelling choice. It stands out in a crowded market with its thoughtful design, premium interior, robust safety features, and smooth driving experience. Whether navigating city streets or embarking on long road trips, the M6 Pro proves to be a dependable companion, making it a worthy contender in the MPV segment.
