Solons support emergency traffic powers for Duterte

Will this finally solve traffic woes on EDSA?

A request to give President Duterte emergency powers to solve the worsening traffic congestion in Metro Manila will be considered by the House of Representatives.

Majority Leader Martin Romualdez and Batangas Rep. Raneo Abu said they are endorsing the request of Transporation Secretary Arthur Tugade to give President Duterte special traffic-related authority to resolve the issue of traffic problem in Metro Manila.

Tugade said that giving Duterte special powers would speed up the implementation of programs aimed at easing traffic congestion.

Samar Rep. Edgar Mary Sarmiento said Tugade is considering a synchronized and centralized bus dispatch system which would field sufficient buses during peak hours and fewer units during non-peak hours to lessen congestion along EDSA.

“We are committed to help the President address the traffic problem in Metro Manila and other highly urbanized cities. Traffic congestion is now a national emergency that undermines the lives of many people, the country’s economy and our productivity,” Romualdez said.

Abu added that the President should be authorized to exercise all powers needed to resolve traffic woes in the metro.

Abu filed the proposed Proof of Parking Space Act which would mandate car buyers to present a notarized affidavit showing a permanent parking space before being allowed to purchase a vehicle.

Abu claimed that the proposed bill would be part of the answer in easing traffic problem since drivers tend to leave their vehicles on the road. – With Jess Diaz/STAR
