Pasay City says no to vehicles with noisy mufflers

If you have a “cool vehicle” with that loud sporty sound coming from your exhaust, think twice about passing through Pasay City – or put a stop to all that racket.

In a report by The STAR, the Pasay City Council has approved Ordinance 6009, banning the use of noisy aftermarket mufflers on all types of vehicles such as motorcycles and tricycles.

Motorists who will be caught violating the city ordinance will be fined up to P4,000 and could have their driver’s license revoked.

“Exposure to certain levels of noise can result in physiological, psychological and economic damage,” the ordinance declared. “Any sound becomes unwanted when it interferes with normal activities such as sleeping, conversation or disrupts or diminishes one’s quality life.”

City officials said that motorists routinely remove their vehicles’ built-in silencers that reduce noise and replace them with a noisy exhaust system.

“We are entitled to a quiet environment without the intrusion of noise, which may be hazardous to our health and welfare,” Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano said. – Ghio Ong
