One person died while seven others were injured after a passenger jeepney rammed a group of students in Makati City on Wednesday evening.
According to the police, several students were crossing the pedestrian lane along J.P. Rizal corner Mabini street in Brgy. Poblacion at 7:20 p.m.
Suddenly, a passenger jeepney driven by Crisalde Jaictin Tamparo sideswiped the pedestrians.
In a closed-circuit television footage from the barangay, another car stopped to give way to the students crossing the street. However, the jeepney continued until it rammed the pedestrians.
Other students who were not rammed by the jeepney were either left frozen or quick to escape.
Tamparo claimed that he lost his brakes. However, the CCTV footage showed that the jeepney stopped a few meters after he hit the students.
In a statement released on Thursday, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay ordered police “to identify the operator of the jeepney and recommend the immediate suspension of its franchise by LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board).” – With Ghio Ong
