Subic temporarily closes San Bernardino Road to bikers following illegal racing accident

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) on Saturday announced the temporary closure of the stretch of San Bernardino Road to all bikers following an illegal racing accident.

In a video posted on Facebook, a fleet of cyclists were seen attempting to overtake a truck near the New Container Terminal. One 14-year-old biker, however, hesitates and crashes, causing other riders to get derailed as well.

According to witnesses, the accident needed the Philippine Red Cross to respond.

“As much as we encourage exercise and other physical activities among stakeholders of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and take pride that Subic has become a popular destination for biking, we cannot allow activities that may endanger the life and limb of the public while they are inside the jurisdiction of SBMA,” wrote SBMA Chairman and Administrator Wilma Eisma in a public advisory.

SBMA will conduct further investigation on the incident.

“The reopening of the said road to bikers will be subject to the implementation of proper procedures and safety methods. I enjoin everyone to obey SBMA traffic and safety protocols, rules, and regulations if we all want to continue recreational biking in the Subic Bay Freeport,” the advisory read.
