The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned that unregistered motorcycle taxi riders will be apprehended starting today.
In a press briefing, MMDA general manger Jojo Garcia said that riders who are not included in the master list of motorcycle taxis firms Angkas, Joy Ride and Move It will be apprehended by their traffic personnel. Additionally, ‘colorum’ riders who will be caught will have their motorcycles impounded.
“Other ride-hailing apps like Sampa, Kandong, etc. are not permitted to operate and therefore are all illegal. We will also be on the lookout against “habal-habal” riders and terminals,” said Garcia.
Meanwhile, Garcia has urged the public to help the agency in its drive by reporting the locations of “habal -habal” terminals to MMDA’s social media accounts.
“Let us not abuse the government and make sure that riders are all legitimate,” the MMDA official said.
Department of Transportation (DOTr)-Technical Working Group head Antonio Gardiola said that the decision came after they received reports that a lot of riders operating in Metro Manila are not part of the master list submitted by the three motorcycle ride hailing firms.
With this, Garcia warned Angkas, Move It and JoyRide about strictly complying with the 15,000 rider cap.
Last month, the DOTr allowed each motorcycle taxi service provider to operate a maximum of 15,000 units during the pilot run.
