Toyota launches the new Wigo

Auto industry leader Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) launched the other day the 2020 update of the country’s bestselling entry-level hatchback, the Wigo.

Launched via the company’s first-ever interactive digital reveal streamed live online, the new Wigo comes at a time when the public faces limitations and challenges in public transportation complicated by increasing safety concerns. The new Wigo, whose prices start at P568,000, aims to address mobility needs during these times by offering a solid option for budget-conscious first-time car buyers and those looking for an extra car.

“The new Wigo remains an iconic car that offers the same familiar feeling of practicality and reliability, but made more advanced, more convenient, safer, and more fun with its sleek and sporty TRD Styling,” said TMP president Atsuhiro Okamoto in his welcome remarks.

The 2020 Wigo lineup is spearheaded by the exciting new TRD S variant, which sports a sporty TRD body kit. The rest of the lineup introduces updates and more advanced features while still boasting the legendary reliability and quality of a Toyota — all while being fun to drive.

The midrange Wigo G variant gets upscale-looking machine-cut 14-inch alloy wheels (with 175/65R14 tires) and new clear-lens taillamps. The G and entry-level E variant also share a new and very sporty-looking front bumper characterized by a large blacked out grille and distinctive blacked-out triangular foglight surrounds.

On top of the snazzy new alloy wheels and taillamps, the TRD S sports a racier look with the TRD aero body kit, which includes a front spoiler, side skirts, a two-tone rear spoiler, a rear diffuser-type skirt, as well as TRD S badge and decals. The new Yellow SE color is exclusive to the TRD S variant.

The TRD S variant’s TRD kit also includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto/Aux/USB/Bluetooth compatibility, Voice Command feature, and a class-leading Digital Video Recorder.

The spacious interior features redesigned seats for better support and more comfort and chrome accents for more elegance. The new Wigo also features a new touch-panel LCD aircon controls (for TRD S and G variants) for easier access.

The new Wigo now comes with the push start button and steering wheel audio buttons as well as power retract-and-adjust side mirrors. Parking is more convenient and beginner-friendly now with the new back camera that comes standard on the Wigo TRD S and Wigo G. The Wigo G variants have a touchscreen audio system with Aux, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. All variants come with power door locks and a new instrument panel design.

Safety features are never compromised with all variants coming with SRS airbags for the driver and front passenger, back sonar, and Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS).

Under the hood, the new Wigo carries over its 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine developing 66hp and 89Nm of torque. This highly fuel-efficient engine is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic.

Pricing for the new Wigo is as follows:

Wigo E MT P568,000

Wigo G MT P623,000

Wigo G AT P658,000

Wigo TRD S P700,000

Available colors for all Wigo variants are White and Gray Metallic, with Silver Metallic, Orange Metallic, and Black available on the Wigo E, Wigo G MT, and Wigo G AT. As mentioned, the standout Yellow SE color is exclusive to the Wigo TRD S.

First launched in the country in 2014, Toyota’s well-loved hatchback quickly dominated the market and has since sustained its leadership, cornering a 69-percent segment share in 2019.
