Global automaker Chery recently released its sales results, posting record monthly sales of 115,700 units in December and annual sales of 730,000 units in 2020, ranking first among Chinese passenger vehicle brands in terms of exports—a position it has held for 18 consecutive years.
The midsize 7-seater Chery Tiggo 8 was the brand’s bestseller with over 100,000 units delivered in 2020. To date Chery has sold 9.05 million cars to customers worldwide—1.7 million, or almost 20 percent, of which to overseas customers.
The upheavals caused by the global pandemic in 2020 have posed the most difficult challenges to the global auto industry since World War II. But despite the difficult market conditions, Chery has managed to maintain month-on-month growth for 10 months in a row since March, achieving record monthly sales of 88,000 units, 102,000 units and 116,000 units from October to December, respectively.
Chery registered year-on-year growth of 28 percent in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the same period in 2019. As of December, Chery had three models with monthly sales of over 10,000 units—the Tiggo 8, the new Tiggo 5x and the all-new Tiggo 7. The Tiggo 8 recorded sales of over 20,000 units for two consecutive months and posted total sales of nearly 300,000 units over the two years since its launch.
Chery has likewise risen to the pandemic-related challenges in overseas operations, achieving year-on-year export growth of 18.7 percent amid the economic slump. To date Chery has established 5 R&D bases, 10 overseas plants, as well as over 1,500 overseas dealers and service networks across the world Its overseas total production capacity has reached 200,000 units per year. In 2020, Chery was listed among the Top 20 Chinese Enterprises with the Best Global Image for five years.
Behind the strong momentum of Chery’s auto sector is the outstanding performance of its various brands and models. The Chery Arrizo 5, whose full electric version, the Arrizo 5e, was introduced to the Philippine market last year, was the only Chinese sedan ranked by the J.D. Power 2020 China Initial Quality Study (IQS).
Chery’s joint venture brands also achieved fruitful results in 2020: Chery Jaguar Land Rover, a joint manufacturing and distribution venture between Chery and UK’s Jaguar Land Rover, saw its 300,000th vehicle roll off the line, achieving sales growth for 9 consecutive months and registering annual sales of 57,900 units, up 8.8 percent year on year.
In the Philippines, Chery is distributed by Chery Auto Philippines/United Asia Auto Group Inc. (UAAGI).
