As more Filipinos go electric, Malayan Insurance expands EV coverage

More Filipinos are going electric and Malayan Insurance is making sure the coverage keeps pace with the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

The shift to electric vehicles isn’t something happening in the future anymore. It’s happening now, on Philippine roads, in subdivisions, and at charging stations in malls across the country. BYDs, Teslas, and plug-in hybrids are becoming a familiar sight, and yet for a long time, getting proper insurance for them meant settling for a policy that wasn’t really built for them.

Malayan Insurance is changing that. The company has officially announced coverage for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs) under its motorcar portfolio — with guidelines built specifically around how these cars actually work, not adapted from policies written for gasoline engines.

With one of the broadest EV acceptance lists in the local insurance market, Malayan Insurance

now covers a growing range of electric and plug-in hybrid models from leading global manufacturers, making it easier for more Filipinos to secure protection regardless of the vehicle they choose.

For existing AutoMaster policyholders, the update is particularly significant. AutoMaster has long been trusted to protect Filipino drivers on the road and that protection now extends to electric vehicles. The upgraded coverage includes specialized EV features: battery diagnostics, dedicated towing, and coverage for home charging units. These are the protections that matter most to drivers making the transition to electric.

Electric vehicles represent the future of transportation, but they also require a different approach to protection,” said Juan Enrico Soller, Project Development Manager of Malayan Insurance. “By expanding AutoMaster to include specialized EV coverage, we’re ensuring that our customers have access to insurance solutions that are relevant, comprehensive, and ready for the roads ahead.”

Existing policyholders who decide to go electric won’t have to start from scratch. Updating an AutoMaster policy to cover an EV is designed to be as frictionless as the vehicles themselves, a straightforward upgrade, not a complicated re-enrollment.

Central to the new guidelines is the recognition that EV batteries are unlike any other component in a vehicle. Replacing one is a fundamentally different and far more costly situation than a standard repair. Every BEV and PHEV policy now carries a dedicated Battery Indemnity Clause and a battery-specific coverage schedule to reflect that reality.

Eligible models include the BYD Seagull, Tesla Model 3/Y, Volvo EX90 Ultra, Chery Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV, BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, and BMW X5 xDrive30e PHEV, among many others. The list continues to expand as new electric vehicle models enter the Philippine market, allowing Malayan Insurance to support a wider range of EV owners than ever before.

As the Philippine EV market continues to gain momentum, Malayan Insurance is ensuring that its products evolve alongside it. By combining specialized EV coverage, support for a wide range of vehicle models, and the trusted protection of AutoMaster, the company is helping drivers embrace the future of mobility with greater confidence.

Because when the future arrives, protection should already be there waiting for it.
