WATCH: Barangay defies DILG clearing ops, turns road into basketball court

Is this another case of ningas cogon – or simply hardheadedness?

After local government units, under orders from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) conducted a series of clearing operations in a bid to ease the traffic situation in Metro Manila, a concerned citizen spotted a glaring obstruction on the street: a makeshift basketball court.

In a contributed video sent to, more than a dozen people can be seen playing basketball along Scout Torillo corner Scout Borromeo in Barangay South Triangle in Quezon City.

According to the source, the barangay chose to close half of the road’s lane just to give way to the basketball court (complete with markings) despite having its own basketball court at the roof-deck of the barangay hall.

The same basketball court can be seen in one of the Facebook posts of Barangay South Triangle.

After drawing flak online, the Facebook page of Barangay South Triangle posted an updated, saying that the basketball court has already been dismantled.

“The movable and temporary basketball court along Scout Torillo/Scout Borromeo corner Scout Madriñan has been dismantled. Our purpose was to get the youth away from playing video/computer games all day by setting up a means of recreation,“ it said in a statement.

The DILG issued Memorandum Circular 2019-121 last July 29, ordering all local government units to reclaim public roads that are being used for private purposes.

The deadline expired last week.
