Cars have shifted from halogen to xenon to LED lighting in less than two decades. And Audi has led the industry throughout this transition, with lighting technologies defining the brand’s models in every era by combining high function with a unique design identity.
In 2003, the Audi A8 of the time offered adaptive light with automatic-dynamic headlight range control. Less than a decade later, the Audi R8 introduced dynamic turn signals which were much more perceptible, marking a significant gain in safety. In 2017, Audi presented LED headlights featuring HD Matrix technology—in the A8 these even came with a laser serving as an additional high-beam light.
In recent years, Audi has started digitizing the Matrix LED headlight. Digital OLED rear lamps also expanded the selection of designs for current Audi models. The developments are opening up new possibilities as light becomes a medium of communication and interaction, able to give Audi customers a variety of styling and customization options.
Among Audi models which benefit from such possibilities is the new, 2021 Audi Q7. Characterized by hallmark SUV elements of Audi’s current design language, the new Audi Q7—now available in the Philippines and can be presented via the Audi Live View fully digital luxury experience—flaunts HD Matrix LED headlights. These not only provide the best and most intelligent illumination possible, but also emphasize with their contour and light signature the width of the seven-seat family luxury SUV. On its restyled rear, the new Audi Q7 is fitted with sophisticated LED taillights defined by technical graphics.
When combined with the model’s new exterior features, like the prominent octagon-shaped Singleframe grille with six upright slats, two-part side air inlets, a sill treatment that underscores the SUV’s ground clearance, and the striking chrome strip at the rear that carries forward the horizontal body lines, the HD Matrix LED headlights and taillights raise the new Audi Q7’s design to a new level.
The new Audi Q7’s updated design also stretched the SUV’s length to more than five meters, resulting in an even more spacious interior that is longer than any of its direct competitors. Class-leading headroom and elbow room ensure comfortable seating for seven people.
Included among the technological features of the latest Audi Q7 are a new digital operating system that has two large touchscreens providing haptic and acoustic feedback for their touch controls; the Audi virtual cockpit plus which has a high-resolution color information display; MMI navigation plus with MMI touch response; Parking Aid Plus with 360 display; a multifunction plus steering wheel with paddle shifters; a Bang & Olufsen premium audio system; an ambient LED lighting package; four-zone automatic air-conditioning; the Audi Music Interface in the rear seat; tire pressure monitoring; advanced traction and stability control systems; and numerous other driver-assist systems. Fitted as standard are an electrically operated tailgate with foot-gesture control, and power-latching, soft-closing doors.
Complementing the new Audi Q7’s updated styling are 20-inch cast aluminum wheels in five-V spoke turbine design.
Just as technologically advanced is the powertrain of the new Audi Q7, comprised of a 3.0-liter TDI V6 turbocharged diesel engine that makes 286 hp and 600 Nm, an eight-speed tiptronic transmission and the quattro all-wheel drive. The engine is equipped with a mild hybrid system, guaranteeing efficiency along with performance. The system uses a belt alternator starter to power a 48-volt main electrical system, in which a compact lithium-ion battery stores energy recovered during braking. The new Audi Q7 uses this energy to coast for up to 40 seconds with its engine switched off—it restarts immediately as soon as the accelerator is pressed.
As well as intelligently illuminating the road, Audi’s advanced lighting technologies visually communicate all these systems through distinct signatures and dynamic patterns.
