To help displaced jeepney drivers who lost work during the community quarantine, delivery service provider Lalamove and the Quezon City local government launched LalaJeep — a new type of delivery service that makes use of the iconic Philippine jeepney.
LalaJeep provides jeepney drivers with an alternative source of income as they cater to the delivery needs of the Quezon City residents. For business owners heavily reliant on the delivery app in moving essential goods and shifting their businesses online, LalaJeep is an affordable option that helps enterprises adapt to the new norm.
From June 15 to August 15, customers will see LalaJeep as a new delivery type on the Lalamove app, just in between the motorcycle and the 300kg delivery services. LalaJeep will only be available in Quezon City during the project duration.
“Since our jeepney drivers are directly affected by the continuing community quarantine, this LalaJeep program is a welcome initiative which will provide alternative livelihood for them. We are grateful to Lalamove for piloting this program in Quezon City,” shares Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.
“This project is aligned with Lalamove’s goal to empower communities and uplift the livelihood of those who are heavily affected by the pandemic. This will allow our services better to suit every business owner and day-to-day user’s delivery needs. This project is a testament that with governmental support, we can deliver possibilities faster,” adds Lalamove Philippines managing director Dannah Majarocon.
At the e-signing ceremony, Lalamove revealed that around 200 jeepney drivers have already signed up to be part of the LalaJeep fleet. The Quezon City government facilitated group training sessions to help jeepney drivers onboard the delivery app.
