The Porsche 911 Speedster is a solid investment

Based on the 991-generation Porsche 911 R and 911 GT3, the Porsche 911 Speedster is visually linked to the forebear of all Porsche sports cars—the 356 “No. 1” Roadster from 1948. The 911 Speedster celebrated its world premiere as a concept vehicle in 2018 at the “70 Years of Porsche Sports Cars” anniversary in Zuffenhausen, Germany. In December last year, it was a 911 Speedster that rolled off the assembly line as the final 991 ever built.

To honor the year in which the 356 “No. 1” Roadster was certified for road use, only 1,948 991-generation 911 Speedsters were offered to markets across the globe. Examples of this very special model are available in Porsche Centre Philippines.

This limited production run exemplifies exclusivity—and resulting appreciating value—of the current 911 Speedster. In April, for instance, an online auction hosted by RM Sotheby’s saw the last 911 Speedster built hammering for $500,000, an amount that easily eclipsed the car’s pre-auction estimate of $311,940. Porsche Cars North America matched the winning bid to raise the total proceeds to $1 million, which was then donated to United Way Worldwide to aid the nonprofit organization’s work for COVID-19 relief in the USA.

Any cursory search at reputable sites, such as the duPont Registry, would also reveal that any model generation of the 911 Speedster—beginning from the original released in 1989—is continuously rising in value as the years pass.

The current 911 Speedster embodies the original virtues of Porsche—lightweight construction, efficiency, purity and driving pleasure. It packs a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine making 502hp, which is matched to a six-speed manual gearbox and a high-performance sports chassis.

Defining the 911 Speedster’s form is its convertible top that stores beneath a compartment lid with double-bubble streamliners—a quintessential feature of the sports car ever since the original model. This piece is the largest and most complex component yet that Porsche has used in a road model. Made from a single piece of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, two trim elements in the double bubbles make room for the roll-over protection system. Despite its pure design, the fabric convertible top is suitable for everyday use. Combining this with a shortened windshield frame and smaller side windows gives the 911 Speedster its athletic profile—just like in the 356 Speedster.
