BJ Mercantile brings in THACO AUTO trucks and buses

BJ Mercantile is continuing the expansion of its portfolio in the market. Popularly known as the official distributor of Scania buses in the Philippines, they started a partnership with Hongqi cars last year just in time for their 50th anniversary. Now, they are back to expand their commercial vehicle lineup with Vietnam’s THACO.

THACO (Truong Hai Auto Corporation) AUTO is the automotive arm of THACO. It is one of the major players in Vietnam’s automotive scene in terms of sales and manufacturing. They are consistently in the top rankings for commercial vehicles, and also have a sizable amount of sales in the passenger car market that combined, result in a 32% market share (PC + CV). They have an industrial park in Chu Lai, Quang Nam, Vietnam that spans 1,400 hectares. It houses their different facilities that focus on manufacturing trucks, buses, cars for partner brands, and parts.

BJ Mercantile, represented by their Vice President Leilani Lim Tan, and THACO AUTO Vice President Doan Dat Ninh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that assigns BJ Mercantile as the official sales and service channel, as well as parts distributor of THACO AUTO trucks and buses in the Philippines.

Tan said the addition of THACO AUTO in their lineup will undoubtedly help their customers have more options in choosing their fleet commercial vehicles. It will stand alongside BJ Mercantile’s other brands like Scania, Ashok-Leyland, Fuso, and Hongqi.

“This collaboration aligns with our commitment to provide innovative, cost-effective, and reliable transport solutions to support the growth of Filipino businesses,” Tan said.

“The Philippines is a highly potential market with a well-defined public transportation system modernization roadmap,” Ninh said during his speech. According to him, THACO AUTO buses have been in the country as early as 2019 to test the market’s reception and were well-received by customers mainly due to their design and quality. They also say that their vehicles are built for tropical climates and heavy-duty use, making them ideal for our local roads.

“Moving forward, THACO AUTO will continue to expand our bus product lineup and distribute THACO-branded trucks, develop distribution and service networks in the Philippine market,” Ninh said.

Initial offerings will consist of trucks and buses powered by internal combustion engines. Tan said electrified products are not in consideration mainly due to lack of infrastructure in the country.
