On October 17, 2023, Beijing Time, Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. and IUCN concluded the signing of a memorandum of cooperation in Wuhu, China. Ningbo, Secretary of the Wuhu Municipal Committee, and Mr. Yin Tongyue, Chairman of Chery Holdings Group, along with Zhang Yan, IUCN China Representative, and Giuditta Andreaus, Senior Manager of Strategic Partnerships Unit at IUCN Headquarters jointly attended the signing ceremony.

This milestone moment signifies the official global launch of the “Cherish the Nature”. In the future, together with IUCN, Chery will collaboratively forge new ecological conservation and restoration models for forests, wetlands, and oceans. This initiative aims to contribute Chery’s efforts towards achieving carbon neutrality,  nature positive, and promoting global sustainable development. According to the agreement, the collaboration between Chery and IUCN will be divided into two stages. With 2023-2024 constituting the first phase, Chery will focus on ecological practices with the main objective of “enhancing awareness and capabilities” in China. They will gather Chery’s “Global Nature Ambassadors” to engage in knowledge exchange and learning at China’s premier Nature-based Solutions (NbS) implementation sites. This will involve capacity building and strategic planning for NbS, as well as leveraging IUCN platform for capacity building to establish a foundation for global projects.

From 2025 to 2028, in the second stage, Chery will vigorously launch global projects in conjunction with IUCN-covered regions. They will promote the implementation of the “Cherish the Nature” NbS global initiative in countries and regions where Chery subsidiaries are established. It is planned to unveil the global initiative of the “Cherish the Nature” at the 8th IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2025, aiming to promote global ecological sustainability.

IUCN is the world’s largest and oldest global environmental conservation organization. Comprising over 1,400 member organizations, including governments and non-governmental entities from more than 170 countries worldwide, IUCN has gathered over 18,000 experts in fields such as species survival, environmental law, and protected areas. Over the past 75 years, IUCN has initiated nearly a thousand on-site projects and various activities across different regions worldwide. Functioning as a global “seeder” for environmental conservation efforts, IUCN has continuously rallied influential international organizations and companies.

IUCN holds significant influence in international environmental conventions and policies. Among IUCN’s highly effective environmental conservation initiatives, NbS have gained widespread attention worldwide in recent years.

IUCN defines NbS as actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural and modified ecosystems that effectively and adaptively address societal challenges, while also providing benefits for human well-being and biodiversity.

As one of the earliest Chinese automotive companies to venture into the international market, Chery has consistently prioritized technological innovation and quality leadership. It has evolved into a cherished “Chinese business card” embraced by users in over 80 countries and regions worldwide. Chery’s global influence continues to grow steadily. Following the signing of the memorandum of cooperation, Chery will adhere to the core principles of “people-centeredness” ,”harmonious coexistence of humans and nature” and “respecting, adapting to, and protecting nature” as outlined in IUCN – Global Standard for NbS and Guidance for using the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions. The company will focus on implementing NbS in natural ecosystems, agricultural ecosystems and urban ecosystems within the geographical scope of China. This is in pursuit of the vision to “embrace natural solutions and transition into an era of nature positive.”
James Hardcastle, Head of the Protected and Conserved Areas Team at IUCN, once stated, “China is one of the countries making the greatest contributions to conservation globally. Its commitment to nature conservation is resolute, and in this regard, China is winning the ‘World Cup’.”

With a 26-year development history, Chery has unwaveringly adhered to the concept of sustainable development. It has taken on the responsibility of green environmental protection and energy conservation, aligning itself with the global trend of electrification, intelligentization, and the era of “dual carbon” targets in the automotive industry revolution.

As the Memorandum of Understanding between Chery and IUCN is signed, the first “2023 Chery International User Summit” is drawing global attention, aiming to collaboratively shape a green new ecosystem with users worldwide. Chery will seize this opportunity of partnering with IUCN to strive towards becoming a significant participant, contributor, and leader in global green civilization construction. Chery aims to provide intelligent solutions in the field of ecological protection, working alongside the world to co-create a beautiful world where humans and nature harmoniously coexist, thus safeguarding the ecological balance of our planet.
