MG HS goes hybrid

MG Philippines has been steadily building its electrified portfolio since 2024. Its move toward hybrid and EV offerings started with the Cyberster roadster, followed shortly by the MG 3 Hybrid+. Then came the ZS Hybrid+, which updated MG’s best-selling crossover for buyers beginning to look for electrified alternatives without moving to a full EV.

The arrival of the HS Hybrid+ follows this move. MG’s compact SUV sits in one of the most competitive segments in the Philippines, surrounded by heavy hitters like the Ford Territory, Toyota Corolla Cross, and BYD Sealion 6. Electrification has become a key selling point in this category, and MG needed to give the HS a timely push toward modernity.

Rather than a minor update, the HS transforms into a model that better fits today’s expectations – more efficiency, more safety tech, and a fresher look. It’s a strategic addition that widens MG PH’s electrified lineup while giving shoppers another hybrid option that doesn’t stray far from familiar crossover territory.

Under the hood, the HS Hybrid+ runs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Combined output sits at 221 hp and 340 Nm, putting it in line with many turbocharged gas-only compact SUVs while gaining the benefits of electric assistance. Power is routed through a two-speed hybrid transmission driving the front wheels, supported by a 1.83 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Of note, the setup is geared toward being biased to using the electric motor, especially in low-speed situations where it does all the work. MG also claims improved overall efficiency, which should appeal to daily commuters looking to save on fuel without needing a plug.

The exterior dimensions is pretty much the outgoing HS – 4,570 mm long and 1,890 mm wide – making it one of the larger entries in its class. What changes is the expression. The front end gets a more assertive grille, wider and more sculpted than before, giving the hybrid model a more planted stance. Slim Matrix LED headlights sit flush along the upper edge, complemented by daytime running lights and fog lamps that emphasize the sharp lines that MG has been using in its newer models.

Along the sides, the character lines are more pronounced, and the gloss-black and silver accents add a bit of contrast. The Hybrid+ rides on 19-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in 225/55 R19 Bridgestone Alenza tires, which help it visually match the sportier look of similarly sized competitors. All four corners are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, and power-folding mirrors and roof rails come standard.

The rear gets a sleeker treatment as well. The LED taillights form a double-blade, sword-like pattern across the tailgate, and the bumper design looks cleaner compared to the non-hybrid version sold overseas. A roof-mounted spoiler and hands-free power tailgate contribute to convenience, while the overall silhouette maintains the upright, practical stance the HS nameplate is known for.

Inside, the HS Hybrid+ features MG’s latest layout, centered on a unified widescreen arrangement. The 12.3-inch digital cluster and the 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen are placed side-by-side for a single-panel look. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are onboard, along with Bluetooth connectivity and multiple USB ports. A wireless phone charger sits at the base of the center console.

The interior theme is mostly black with silver and gloss-black trim pieces. The seats offer power adjustment for both driver and passenger, with memory settings on the driver’s side. Dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, a built-in air purifier, and rear A/C vents help keep the cabin comfortable in both rows. Other convenience touches include push-start ignition, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, follow-me-home lighting, and a panoramic sunroof that opens up the space visually.

Safety is a major selling point for the HS Hybrid+. The model carries 5-star Euro NCAP and 5-star ANCAP ratings, and MG Pilot driver-assist features are standard. This suite includes adaptive cruise control, intelligent cruise assist, active emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic jam assist. It also comes with seven airbags and a 360-degree view camera, supported by front and rear parking sensors and hill-start and hill-hold control.

MG Philippines is offering the HS Hybrid+ with a special introductory price of P1,388,888. The crossover is covered by five years of roadside assistance, a seven-year vehicle warranty, and an eight-year battery warranty. Color options include Black Pearl, Lunar Gray, Pearl White, Champagne Silver, and Diamond Red.
