The local EV scene is undeniably heating up. With fuel prices climbing as fast as your Meralco bill, more drivers are eyeing electric options, and fresh faces keep popping up to tempt first-time EV buyers. Compact electric crossovers are stealing the spotlight, blending just the right mix of practicality, city-friendly size, and wallet-friendly pricing.
Omoda & Jaecoo wants a bigger slice of that action, and their latest contender is the Jaecoo J5 EV. This compact electric SUV brings sharp, modern looks and a spec sheet that should make anyone thinking of ditching their gas-guzzler do a double-take.
While some EVs look like they just landed from outer space, the J5 EV keeps its feet on the ground. Up front, you get a sleek face with LED lights, a panoramic glass roof for stargazing, roof rails that actually carry stuff, shiny alloy wheels, and a power tailgate for good measure. The size? Perfect for city life: 4,380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide, and 1,650 mm tall, all riding on a 2,620-mm wheelbase.
Step inside and you’ll find a cabin that’s both minimalist and loaded with goodies. The all-black interior gets soft-touch materials on the dash, leather on the doors, and a massive 13.2-inch touchscreen smack in the middle – just begging for fingerprints.
As for creature comforts, the J5 EV has plenty: an eight-way power seat for the driver, a six-way manual seat for your co-pilot, wireless charging for your phone, and that panoramic roof to flood the cabin with sunlight. Toss your groceries or weekend bags in the 480-liter cargo hold, with more room to spare.
Safety-wise, it has six airbags, ABS, stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, hill descent control, and ISOFIX child-seat anchors. The J5 EV also comes with an extensive suite of driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, autonomous emergency braking, traffic jam assist, intelligent evasion system, rear collision warning, and a 540-degree HD panoramic camera.
Under the hood – or rather, under the floor – there’s a front-mounted electric motor good for 204 hp and 288 Nm of torque. That’s enough to send the J5 EV from zero to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, which should keep things interesting at the stoplight.
Energy is supplied by a 58.9-kWh CATL LFP battery. Officially, Jaecoo rates the crossover at up to 461 km of driving range under the NEDC testing cycle. However, ahead of its Philippine launch, Omoda & Jaecoo Philippines conducted an endurance drive observed by representatives from the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP).
The route kicked off in Bulacan, shot up north through a TPLEX to La Union, then swung south to finish in Subic. By then, the J5 EV had clocked 432.2 km and still showed 107 km left in the tank – or, well, the battery. Do the math, and that’s a calculated 539.2 km on a single charge.
Of course, your mileage may vary – traffic, hills, how heavy your right foot is, and even the weather all play a part. Charging is a breeze, though: DC fast charging gets you from 30% to 80% in about 28 minutes, with peak charging speeds hitting 130 kW.
The Jaecoo J5 EV lands at P1,399,000. It comes with a seven-year or 200,000-kilometer vehicle warranty, plus eight years or 160,000 kilometers for the battery and electric motor. That’s one more reason for this stylish upstart to stand out as the compact EV crowd gets bigger by the day.
